6 Tips to Beat Frizzy Hair in Spring

We're well into spring now! It's time to throw off the last vestiges of winter, put your thick coats into storage, and deal with the hot mess that is your hair. Spring may bring the heavenly weather and the animals alive, but please, leave the birds nest to the real animals. Anyone prone to the dreaded frizz, this one goes out to you. Here's how to fight that fuzzball fast.

1. Choosing a smoothing shampoo
Your regular shampoo probably won’t cut it when your hair starts to go dry and brittle. Look for products with a smoothing agent present; you shouldn’t need to check the ingredients list, the packaging should just scream SMOOTH or MOISTURISING. Natural oils are great for making hair less brittle, as is keratin. But if you’re the sort of person who loves deciphering the chemically sounding names on the back of the bottle, dimethicones is the one great for smoothing the hair shaft. Now is also the time to ditch the volumizing shampoos as they make your hair swell. Occasionally the frizz will be too… well… frizzed for a smoothing shampoo to make a dent, and that’s when you need to look at…

2. Using a hair mask
I went through my whole life knowing nothing more than lather, rinse and repeat until I turned 30. Then my hair suddenly turned into an untamed beast liable to frizz up at the first sign of moisture. Enter the hair mask, a now-essential part of my hair routine. You pop the mask on in place of conditioner, just after a good shampoo, and leave it for 10-15 minutes, before giving it a good rinse. Result? Glossy, shiny locks, repaired split ends, no frizz in sight. My ultimate fave is bhave Deep Intense Conditioning Masque for $41.95.

3. Finishing off a shower with a blast of cold water
It might not sound that appealing, but turning up the cold at the end of your shower could help prevent frizz. In the same way cold water closes off your skin pores to help keep out the nasties, it also helps close and smooth the scales of your hair cuticle. It’s a few uncomfortably chilly seconds for more lustrous looking hair.

4. Buying satin pillow cases
Bet you never heard about pillowcases relating to haircare, huh? Friction on cotton pillowcases could actually be causing hair damage and breakage, as cotton absorbs your hair’s natural oils. So what’s the solution? Satin or silk pillowcases? Silk retains the moisture that cotton soaks up from your hair, leaving it, ahem, silky smooth. Also, satin and silk are all slippery slidey, reducing friction and hair breakage. They’re also good for skincare for this exact reason. No more creasey face when you wake up in the morning! Try The Goodnight Co. cases, from $79.95.

5. Try a keratin treatment
For the ultimate in smooth tresses, try a professional touch such as bhave’s Smooth In-Salon Treatment. The smoothing service consists of a treatment enriched with argan oil, keratin, collagen and silk amino acids and leaves hair looking glossy and silky, without stripping it of its shape and bounce. Beauty bloggers around the world are OBSESSED with this treatment that lasts up to four months. It’s designed to cut down on all the time you spend treating and styling your hair, and gives you a “I woke up like this” smooth-locked look. I for one could deal with an extra 30 minutes sleep in the morning that this “wash and go” treatment can provide! Treatments are available at a number of Brisbane salons.

6. Use tools designed to fight frizz
There are certain beauty tools specifically made to battle with brittle frizz. When looking for a hair dryer, look for one with ionic capabilities. Ionic dryers release negative ions that break down water molecules, and are essentially a form of magic that helps dry hair faster. Faster drying means less frying on your locks. And for goodness’ sake, if you must blow dry your hair, get a blow drying spray, such as Shu Uemura Straight Forward Blow Dry Oil, from $45. This little multitasker promises to improve the health of your hair, decrease frizz, increase shine AND speed up the drying process. Shut up and take my money.

For an extra tip, the best anti-frizz shampoos that will make your hair shine are:
1. Bhave Rescue Shampoo, $44.95
2. Kevin.Murphy Hydrate-Me.Wash, $38.95
3. Eleven Smooth Me Now Anti-Frizz Shampoo, $23.95
4. Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo, $34.95
5. OGX Healing and Vitamin E Shampoo, $17.99
